Allergy Cold

Cold allergy (a. ex frigore) is an allergic reaction that occurs when the skin or mucous membranes are exposed to cold.

Causes

Cold allergies are most often caused by sudden changes in temperature. Upon contact with cold air, water or objects, histamine and other biologically active substances are released, which trigger an allergic reaction.

Symptoms

  1. redness and swelling of the skin
  2. itching, burning, tingling
  3. the appearance of blisters, bubbles
  4. runny nose, sneezing (when cold air enters the nose and throat)

Exacerbation of cold allergies is facilitated by:

  1. sudden temperature changes
  2. high air humidity
  3. drinking cold drinks and ice cream
  4. staying outdoors for long periods of time in cold weather

Treatment

  1. avoid sudden cooling of the skin
  2. wear warm clothes made from natural fabrics
  3. take antihistamines
  4. make compresses and apply skin softening creams
  5. for severe reactions - hormonal ointments and tablets

Prevention of cold allergies involves gradual adaptation of the body to low temperatures and careful attention to one’s health.
