Androgenization

Androgenization is the process of a woman acquiring masculine traits under the influence of androgenic hormones.

This phenomenon can be observed both normally and in pathology. Normally, androgenization occurs with age, when androgen levels increase in women. At the same time, such features as a deepening of the voice, growth of hair on the face and body, and an increase in muscle mass appear.

Pathological androgenization occurs in endokrinopathies accompanied by hyperandrogenism - increased production of androgens by the ovaries or adrenal glands. These may be ovarian or adrenal tumors, polycystic ovary syndrome, congenital dysfunction of the adrenal cortex. In this case, pronounced signs of masculinization are observed - increased muscle mass, deepening of the voice, male pattern baldness, acne, hirsutism.

Treatment for androgenization depends on the cause of its occurrence. For polycystic ovary syndrome, hormonal drugs are prescribed; for tumors, surgical treatment is prescribed. It is important to promptly diagnose and treat conditions leading to androgenization in order to prevent irreversible changes in a woman’s appearance and health.
