Apo-Chlordiazepoxide: use, side effects and contraindications

Apo-Chlordiazepoxide is a benzodiazepine derivative that is used as a tranquilizer. This drug is manufactured by Apotex Inc. in Canada and has the international name Chlordiazepoxide. It is also known by the synonyms Librium, Napoton, Radepur 10, Chlozepid and Elenium. Apo-Chlordiazepoxide is available in capsule dosage forms: 5 mg, 10 mg and 25 mg.

Application

Apo-Chlordiazepoxide is used to treat neurosis- and psychopath-like disorders such as anxiety, agitation, irritability and insomnia. It can also be used to treat menopause, premenstrual syndrome, vegetative-vascular dystonia, schizophrenia, diseases accompanied by itching, irritability, insomnia and eczema. The drug can be used for premedication before operations and long-term diagnostic procedures, as well as in the postoperative period.

Side effects

Side effects of Apo-Chlordiazepoxide may include drowsiness, lethargy, impaired memory and concentration, slowed mental and motor reactions, muscle weakness, gait disturbance, ataxia, confusion, disorientation, dizziness, headache, EEG changes, tachycardia, palpitations, arterial hypotension (when taking high doses), thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, dry mouth, nausea, constipation or diarrhea, intestinal colic, liver dysfunction, yellowness of the skin, skin rash, itching, peeling of the skin, difficulty breathing, urinary retention, menstrual irregularities cycle and changes in libido (increase or decrease).

Contraindications

Apo-Chlordiazepoxide should not be used in case of hypersensitivity to the drug, pregnancy (first trimester), breastfeeding, age under 4 years, severe myasthenia gravis, respiratory depression, angle-closure glaucoma and acute liver and/or kidney diseases. The drug is also not recommended for patients taking alcohol, narcotic analgesics, anesthetics, hypnotics, neuroleptics with a pronounced sedative effect, muscle relaxants and antidepressants, as this may enhance the depressive effect on the central nervous system.

You should also be careful when using Apo-Chlordiazepoxide in patients with liver and kidney failure, respiratory system pathology, suicidal tendencies, depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, hypertension, heart disease, epilepsy, glaucoma, bronchial asthma and hyperthyroidism.

Before starting to take Apo-Chlordiazepoxide, you must consult your doctor and strictly follow his prescription. It is not recommended to exceed the dose and duration of use, or to abruptly stop taking it, as this can lead to symptoms of drug dependence and withdrawal syndrome.
