Bactrim Forte: use, contraindications and side effects

Bactrim Forte is a combination drug containing sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It is used to treat various infections caused by bacteria. The drug is manufactured by Hoffmann-La Roche in Switzerland.

Indications for the use of Bactrim Forte include respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia), urinary system infections (urethritis, cystitis, pyelitis), skin and soft tissue infections (acne, furunculosis), as well as some other infections, including septicemia, meningitis and toxoplasmosis.

However, the drug has a number of contraindications. Bactrim Forte should not be used in case of hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or trimethoprim, liver or kidney failure, B12-deficiency anemia, agranulocytosis, leukopenia, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood (up to 2 months for oral administration, up to 6 years for parenteral administration), as well as for hyperbilirubinemia in children.

Like any medicine, Bactrim Forte may cause side effects. The main side effects are related to the gastrointestinal tract, hematopoiesis and urinary system. This may be dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, increased transaminases and bilirubin, crystalluria, renal failure and others. Allergic reactions may also occur.
