Emzok: properties, uses and side effects

Emzok is a pharmacological drug that belongs to the group of beta1-adrenergic blockers (cardioselective). It is produced by Galena AS in the Czech Republic and is widely used in medicine around the world to treat various diseases of the cardiovascular system.

The international name of Emzok is metoprolol. The drug is available in several dosage forms such as 50 mg, 100 mg and 200 mg film-coated retard tablets. It contains the active substance metoprolol, which blocks beta1-adrenergic receptors in the heart, which leads to a decrease in heart rate, a decrease in the force of heart contractions and a decrease in blood pressure.

Emzok is widely used to treat mild to moderate hypertension, coronary artery disease, hyperkinetic cardiac syndrome, cardiac arrhythmias, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, mitral valve prolapse, myocardial infarction and migraine. The drug can also be used to treat akathisia caused by antipsychotic drugs.

Despite its wide range of uses, Emzok has a number of contraindications. The drug is not recommended for hypersensitivity to metoprolol, AV block II and III degree, sinoatrial block, acute or chronic heart failure, sick sinus syndrome, sinus bradycardia (heart rate less than 60 beats/min), cardiogenic shock, arterial hypotension (systolic blood pressure less than 100 mmHg), severe peripheral circulatory disorders, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Emzok is limited for use in diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemia, aggravated allergic history, metabolic acidosis, bronchial asthma, emphysema, non-allergic bronchitis, hyperthyroidism, psoriasis, pheochromocytoma, impaired liver and/or kidney function, myasthenia gravis, depression, general anesthesia, elderly and children age.

Like any medicine, Emzok may cause side effects. They may include weakness, dizziness, headache, decreased concentration, depression, muscle cramps, nervousness, anxiety, blurred vision, fatigue, insomnia, bronchospasm, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, increased or decreased appetite, indigestion , dry mouth, loss of taste, increased or decreased sweating, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction in men, increased or decreased blood pressure, bradycardia, arrhythmia, heart block, increased size of the mammary glands in men, allergic reactions, including urticaria, angioedema edema, eosinophilia, anapilaxis and others.

In general, Emzok is an effective and safe drug when prescribed and used correctly. However, as with any medicine, you must follow your doctor's recommendations and not exceed the dosage to avoid side effects and complications.
