The drug is used for the treatment of epilepsy, manic states, prevention of manic-depressive disorders, alcohol withdrawal, trigeminal and glossopharyngeal neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy.

Despite its effectiveness, Carbalepsin Retard may cause side effects. Among them are dizziness, headache, hallucinations, agitation, depression, aggressive behavior, activation of psychosis, diplopia, accommodation disturbances, lens opacification, nystagmus, conjunctivitis, tinnitus, changes in taste, speech disorders, abnormal involuntary movements, peripheral neuritis, paresthesia , muscle weakness and symptoms of paresis, atrioventricular block, congestive heart failure, hyper- or hypotension, thromboembolism, increased levels of liver enzymes, jaundice, hepatitis, renal dysfunction, interstitial nephritis, nausea, vomiting, osteomalacia, sexual dysfunction, hyponatremia, moderate leukopenia , thrombocytopenia, hematopoietic disorders, multiorgan delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions, exfoliative dermatitis, lupus-like syndrome, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Lyell syndrome, anaphylactic reactions.

In addition, Carbalepsin Retard may interact with other drugs. For example, it is incompatible with MAO inhibitors and may also increase the hepatotoxicity of isoniazid. Reducing the effects of anticoagulants, anticonvulsants (hydantoin derivatives or succinimides), barbiturates, clonazepam, primidone, valproic acid is also possible when used simultaneously with Carbalepsin Retard. Phenothiazines, pimozide, thioxanthenes can increase CNS depression; cimetidine, clarithromycin, diltiazem, verapamil, erythromycin, propoxyphene increase the risk of toxic effects of Carbalepsin Retard. Therefore, before starting treatment with Carbalepsin Retard, you must inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including those that you have recently taken or that you plan to start taking in the near future. It is also not recommended to drink alcohol while taking Carbalepsin Retard.
