Cataract Rafanicheskaya

Raphanic cataract is a rare toxic cataract that occurs several months after ergot poisoning.

This type of cataract develops due to the toxic effects of ergot alkaloids on the lens of the eye. Ergot is a plant that can sometimes get into grain crops and cause severe poisoning in people and animals when contaminated grains are consumed.

Ergot poisoning causes damage to various organs, including the eyes. A few months after intoxication, clouding of the lens - cataracts - may develop.

Raphanic cataract is a toxic cataract and is characterized by rapid progression. It leads to a sharp decrease in vision and requires timely surgical treatment - removal of the affected lens and implantation of an intraocular lens.
