Dipetalonema Streptocerca

Dipetalonema streptocerca is a species of helminth of the family Setariidae, class of nematodes. The definitive host is humans, and midges are the intermediate host. Distributed in Africa. It is the causative agent of streptocercosis, a disease characterized by fever, swelling and pain in the joints. The parasite is localized in the body cavity of the insect vector. A person becomes infected when bitten by biting midges. Treatment includes surgical removal of the worms and administration of anthelmintic medications. Prevention is based on fighting midges and wearing protective clothing.
