Encephalitis Lethargic Epidemic /lat. Encephalitis letharga epidemica /

This is an acute viral infectious disease of the nervous system, primarily the medulla oblongata and spinal cord, characterized by progressive brain symptoms, impaired consciousness of varying severity, up to the onset of lethargy (hibernation). Sometimes a symptom of ophthalmoplegia develops - paralysis of the eye muscles, less often of other muscle groups. In severe cases of the disease, almost all muscle groups are paralyzed, autonomic functions are disrupted, up to the development of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle). As a result of paralysis of the respiratory muscles, shortness of breath develops; when the muscles of the vocal apparatus are involved, characteristic hoarseness or aphonia develops, and speech disturbances are possible. The incubation period ranges from 2 to 6 days.
