Famocid: an effective remedy for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases

Famocid (international name - famotidine) is a blocker of H2-histamine receptors and belongs to the pharmaceutical group of drugs with similar effects. It is widely used in the treatment of various gastrointestinal diseases, such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, symptomatic ulcers, erosive esophagitis, reflux esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, as well as for the prevention of exacerbations of these diseases.

Famocid is manufactured by San Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd. in India. The drug is available in the form of film-coated tablets containing 20 mg or 40 mg of the active substance - famotidine.

Indications for the use of famocid include the treatment and prevention of exacerbations of gastric and duodenal ulcers, erosive esophagitis, reflux esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, as well as bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract (intravenous administration). The drug can also be used to prevent erosive and ulcerative lesions of the gastrointestinal tract when taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and to prevent aspiration of gastric contents during general anesthesia.

Famocid has some contraindications. It is not recommended for hypersensitivity to famotidine, as well as during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Like any other medicine, famocid can cause side effects. Some of them include dry mouth, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, increased serum transaminases, cholestatic jaundice, fatigue, tinnitus, headache, hallucinations, fever, arrhythmias, muscle pain, arthralgia, dryness skin, allergic reactions (angioedema, itching, urticaria, conjunctivitis, bronchospasm) and irritation at the injection site.

The interaction of famocid with antacids containing magnesium and aluminum may reduce the absorption of the drug. Therefore, it is recommended to prescribe them at least 2 hours apart.

In case of an overdose of famocid, increased side effects may occur. Treatment in such cases may include symptomatic therapy and maintenance of vital functions.
