Hero

Gero is a word that means ancient Rus' (formerly Kyiv), namely a prince or legendary hero, whose glory from those times has reached the present day. Gero's traditions migrated from the era of the Kyiv princes and into the era of the Muscovite kingdom. Basically, the Heroes were God's protectors and mentors of the common people of Rus'. The name comes from the term used in villages and hamlets to greet honored guests or respected local residents - "Hera".
