Glycerin Distilled

Distilled glycerin: use, contraindications and side effects

Distilled glycerin, also known as glycerol, is a dermatoprotective agent produced in Russia by Nefis-cosmetics and Kazan Chemical Plant. This drug is a substance containing only the active ingredient - glycerin.

Indications for the use of distilled glycerin include the treatment of constipation of various origins, including functional, psychogenic, age-related and rectal coprostasis in elderly and senile people. Also, distilled glycerin can be used to prevent constipation in patients who cannot strain during bowel movements, including those with painful, thrombosed hemorrhoids, perianal abscess, anorectal stenosis, and after myocardial infarction. In addition, it can be used to soften the skin and treat mucous membranes.

Contraindications to the use of distilled glycerin include hypersensitivity, renal failure, appendicitis, bleeding, diarrhea, acute hemorrhoids, anal fissures, inflammatory diseases and rectal tumors.

With prolonged local use of distilled glycerin, irritation and discomfort in the rectum may occur, and, rarely, catarrhal proctitis. When used systemically, distilled glycerin can potentiate the effects of diuretics and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.

An overdose of distilled glycerin is possible with systemic use and can be manifested by headache, dizziness, confusion, dry mouth or increased thirst, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, severe dehydration, arrhythmia and renal failure.

Regular use of distilled glycerin as a laxative is not recommended. When used systemically in dehydrated patients, as well as in the presence of diabetes mellitus, the risk of developing symptoms of severe dehydration increases, leading to vascular overload and, accordingly, hyperglycemia. Non-ketone hyperglycemic coma (oral use) is rare, but several deaths have been reported.

In conclusion, distilled glycerin is a dermatoprotective agent that can be used to treat various types of constipation and to soften the skin and mucous membranes. However, before using this drug, you must consult your doctor and become familiar with the contraindications and possible side effects. Regular use of distilled glycerin as a laxative is not recommended, and overdose can be hazardous to health.
