Kokhanovsky Symptom

Kokhanovsky's symptom is a symptom of eyelid closure. It manifests itself in the fact that when the patient tries to close his eyelids, the eyeballs deviate to the side. This is due to damage to the oculomotor nerves or muscles of the eye.

The symptom was first described by the Polish neurologist Adam Kochanowski in 1895, which is why it bears his name. It is characteristic of diseases of the brain stem, such as a tumor or stroke. The cause may also be neuritis of the oculomotor nerve.

To confirm the diagnosis, additional instrumental studies are necessary - CT, MRI of the brain. Kokhanovsky's symptom helps to suspect brain stem pathology in the early stages. Timely treatment in such cases is extremely important to prevent the development of complications and disability of the patient.
