Lauenstein Method

The Lauenstein method is a surgical technique developed by the German surgeon Lauenstein (1850-1915).

This method is used to treat umbilical hernias. It is as follows:

  1. An incision in the skin around the navel and release of the hernial sac.

  2. Opening the hernial sac and moving the contents into the abdominal cavity.

  3. Excision of the hernial sac at the base.

  4. Suturing the aponeurosis at the site of the hernial orifice.

  5. Closure of the umbilical ring with prolene sutures.

  6. Skin closure.

Thus, with the Lauenstein method, radical herniotomy is performed with strengthening of the umbilical ring by suturing the aponeurosis. This allows you to achieve reliable closure of the hernial orifice and prevent recurrence of the hernia.

The method was widely used in surgery at the beginning of the 20th century and is still used in operations on umbilical hernias. It is considered a classic method of radical treatment of this pathology.
