Leprotek: hepatoprotective drug from Yugoslavia

Leprotek is a hepatoprotective agent produced in Yugoslavia. It belongs to the pharmaceutical group of drugs designed to protect and restore liver function. Leprotek contains the active substance silibinin, which is also known under the international name "Silibinin". The drug has several synonyms, including “Karsil”, “Legalon”, “Legalon 70”, “Legalon-35”, “Legalon-70”, “Naturkarsevt”, “Silegon”, “Silymarin” and “Silymarin Sedico instant”.

Leprotec is available in the form of tablets containing 35 mg of silibinin. This drug is used to treat various conditions associated with liver damage. It is effective for toxic liver damage caused by alcoholism, intoxication with halogenated hydrocarbons, heavy metal compounds and drugs. Leprotek is also used for chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis (as part of complex therapy) and lipid metabolism disorders.

Leprotek has some contraindications. It is not recommended in case of hypersensitivity to the drug. Side effects may include diarrhea and allergic reactions, but interactions with other drugs are unknown and there is no evidence of overdose.

A special note applies to Leprotec oral solution. It can be prescribed to patients with diabetes as it does not contain glucose.
