Orthopedic corsets: Devices for holding the spine at rest

Orthopedic corsets are an important means of treating diseases, fractures and curvatures of the spine. They are used to hold the spine at rest, create rest for the affected vertebrae and partially relieve pressure on them. Corsets are made at prosthetic and orthopedic factories from various materials, such as leather, fabric, plaster, nitro varnish, metal splints, plastic masses and others.

Orthopedic corsets can be fixing, unloading or correcting. Fixing and unloading corsets are recommended for spinal tuberculosis, for spinal fractures and after surgery, in order to create rest for the affected vertebrae and partially eliminate pressure on them. They can also be used for low back pain resulting from diseases of the lumbosacral spine.

Corrective corsets are recommended for children with mild scoliosis to prevent further curvature or partial correction. The duration of wearing the corset is determined by the doctor depending on the nature of the disease.

However, wearing a corset for a long time can weaken the muscles of the torso. Therefore, as directed by the doctor, it is necessary to do therapeutic exercises and massage of the trunk muscles, corresponding to the nature of the spinal lesion and the stage of the disease. It is also recommended to wear the corset over a cotton jersey shirt or tank top to avoid skin irritation.

Plastic and metal corsets can be washed, making them easier to care for and maintaining hygiene.

Orthopedic corsets are an important treatment for spinal disorders and can help patients reduce pain, improve mobility and quality of life. However, their use should be under the supervision of a physician, who will determine the type of corset required and the duration of its use.
