Pannus Total

Pannus totalis is a fungal disease of the eye in which inflammatory pannus tissue spreads to the cornea, completely covering the pupil and iris.

Causes

Pannus totalus usually develops with chronic inflammatory eye diseases, such as trachoma, ulcerative keratitis. Vascular granulation tissue grows into the cornea. Bacterial or fungal infections are often the cause.

Symptoms

The main symptoms of pannus total:

  1. Cloudiness and pigmentation of the cornea due to ingrown granulations

  2. Decreased vision up to complete blindness

  3. Pain and redness of the eye

Treatment

Treatment is primarily aimed at eliminating the cause of the disease. Antibiotics and antifungal drugs are used.

Surgical treatment includes removal of the pannus and keratoplasty - transplantation of a donor cornea. This allows you to restore the transparency of the cornea and vision.

With timely treatment, the prognosis is favorable. Without treatment, pannus total leads to irreversible blindness.
