Pseudomonas Pseudomallei

Pseudomonas pseudomallei is a gram-negative saprophytic bacterium that is the causative agent of melioidosis. This disease is also known as glanders or Whitmore's disease. P. pseudomallei is commonly found in soil and water in endemic regions of Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. The bacteria can enter the body through open wounds, inhalation, or ingestion. It causes a wide range of clinical manifestations - from latent infection to fulminant sepsis. Treatment includes long-term use of antibiotics. A vaccine for melioidosis has not yet been developed. P. pseudomallei is classified as a potential Group B biological warfare agent. Laboratory diagnosis and culture handling require enhanced biosecurity measures.
