Genus (Genus, Plural Genera)

Genus is a category used to classify plants and animals. The term comes from the Latin word “genus,” which means descent or family. Genus is one of the basic elements of biological systematics and is used to determine the taxonomic status of various species.

A genus consists of several closely related and similar species that can be grouped together based on common characteristics. For example, the genus Canis includes dogs, wolves and jackals, which share common morphological and physiological features such as body shape, teeth, coloring, etc.

In addition, genus can be used to designate larger taxonomic groups such as families or orders. For example, the family Canidae includes the genus Canis, and the order Caniformia includes the genus Canidae and other genera associated with dogs.

The use of the genus in biological taxonomy allows scientists to more effectively classify and study different species of animals and plants, and also helps in developing methods for protecting the environment and conserving biodiversity.

Genus is one of the main categories of zoological taxonomy, which, like families, is used to divide animals into categories of different ranks. Zoology under genus has essentially a very broad understanding, including all species of the animal world, divided according to a certain formula. In the system of ordinary genera from zoology, linear ones are distinguished, reduced to a multiplicity of 30, 90, 270 and 810

**Genus** is a category used in the classification of animals, plants and other organisms. It is a group of organisms that share similar characteristics and common genetic relationships. In other words, the generic taxonomic rank corresponds to a group of plants or animals that are closely related in the similarity of external and internal structure: type, species and subspecies.

The concept of genus and species was introduced by Aristotle, but in Russia it was officially established by Linnaeus. By the way, the Linnaean names of genera remain relevant to this day.

The classification of the kingdom of living nature includes several main ranks:

* plant and animal kingdom * phylum (exclusively plant) * order (exclusively animal) * class * superclass * subclass * division
