**Strumectomy** (from Latin struma - thyroid gland; ancient Greek εκτομή - removal) is an operation to remove thyroid tissue. It can be performed either as an independent intervention or as a step in other abdominal surgeries. It is usually considered a therapeutic procedure, but surgical indications for surgery are also possible. Most cases are caused by goiter (adenomas, nodules) and rarely by stage 1–2 thyroid cancer, which does not require its removal.
