Virzungoenterostomy (virzungo-enteroanastomosis, VEA) is a surgical operation on the pancreas, which involves creating an anastomosis between its duct and the jejunum.
VEA is performed for chronic pancreatitis, which is characterized by progressive replacement of the pancreatic parenchyma with connective tissue, as well as for pancreatic cysts that are not amenable to conservative treatment.
The operation is performed under general anesthesia and includes the following steps:
- An incision into the abdominal wall and exposure of the pancreas.
- Dissection of the pancreatic duct using a special instrument - pancreaticoduodenostomy.
- Creation of an anastomosis between the pancreatic duct and the jejunum using a stapler.
- Suturing a wound of the abdominal wall.
- Postoperative observation for several days in a hospital setting.
Virzungoenterostomy can reduce pain, improve digestion and reduce the number of complications associated with chronic pancreatitis. However, it is not a panacea and requires constant monitoring by a doctor.
Wirsungoenterostomy is a surgical operation in which an anastomosis is created between the duodenum and jejunum and the Wirsung pancreatic duct or upper duodenal duct on one side and the gastroduodenal zone on the other side to provide nutrition to the pancreas.
