Xalacom: antiglaucoma drug from Belgium

Xalacom is a combined antiglaucoma drug produced by the Belgian companies Pharmacia and Upjohn. Its international name is Latanoprost + Timolol. The dosage form is eye drops that contain two active ingredients: Latanoprost and Timolol.

This drug is widely used to treat open-angle glaucoma and increased ophthalmotonus. Xalacom works by reducing pressure in the eye and improving fluid drainage.

Despite its effectiveness, Xalacom has some contraindications and side effects. It is not recommended for people with hypersensitivity to its components, bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, sinus bradycardia, AV block II-III degree, clinically significant heart failure, cardiogenic shock, pregnant and lactating women.

Side effects may include headache, paresthesia, dizziness, depression, increased pigmentation of the iris, irritation to the eye, macular edema, diplopia, visual disturbances, including refractive errors, conjunctivitis, blepharitis and keratitis. Problems with the cardiovascular system, hematopoiesis, hemostasis and respiratory system may also occur. In case of overdose, bradycardia, hypotension, bronchospasm and cardiac arrest may occur.

When using Xalacom, avoid simultaneous use with other ophthalmic drugs. For maximum effectiveness of the drug, it should be used at intervals of at least 5 minutes.

In general, Xalacom is an effective antiglaucoma drug, but its use should be limited only as prescribed by a doctor. It is important to follow the directions for use and monitor for possible side effects.
