Opistogeny

Opistogenia (opisthogenia; opistho- + Greek genys jaw, lower jaw) is a backward displacement of the lower jaw relative to the upper jaw.

This is a rare disease that causes abnormal growth of the lower jaw. As a result, the lower jaw moves backward and does not meet the upper jaw in the correct position.

The main signs of opistogeny:

  1. The lower jaw protrudes backward relative to the upper
  2. Difficulty chewing and swallowing
  3. Speech Impairment
  4. Change in facial appearance
  5. Pain in the maxillofacial joint

The causes of opistogeny can be congenital (developmental anomalies) or acquired (trauma, inflammatory diseases). For treatment, surgical correction of the position of the lower jaw and orthodontic treatment are used. With timely treatment, the prognosis is favorable.

The term "Opistogeny" refers to the forward and upward movement of the lower jaw, which involves raising the hard and soft palates and closing the mouth by pressing on the teeth in front.
