Ylang-ylang

Canangium odoratum forma genuina

Ylang-ylang is an evergreen tree reaching up to 20 m in height. Distributed in the Asian tropics, Indonesia, Java and Kalimantan, the Philippines, Madagascar and the Comoros Islands. The word “ylang-ylang” in the language of one of the African nationalities means “flower of flowers”, and translated from Filipino it means “fluttering, fluttering”.

Kananga trees are very decorative: long, hanging branches, like those of a willow, with oval shiny leaves (the plant is related to the evergreen magnolia). The tree blooms during the rainy season. Large luxurious flowers of pink, blue or yellow exude a wonderful aroma: warm, alluring, slightly reminiscent of narcissus and hyacinth with a slight hint of jasmine.

In Africa, ylang-ylang was used as a sacrificial incense. In the Philippines, flowers collected in garlands served as the main decoration of various holidays. These flowers could be seen in abundance during the wedding ceremony. In Indonesia, for example, ylang-ylang flowers were used to completely cover the wedding bed of newlyweds, since the delicate aroma of this plant has a stimulating effect on sexual function. Residents of the Philippine Islands made an ointment from ylang-ylang flowers, which was used to treat various infectious diseases, including malaria, as well as skin infections. Coconut oil infused with ylang-ylang flowers served as a means for the islanders to protect their hair from the effects of sea water and their skin from insect and snake bites.

Ylang-ylang essential oil was first obtained in 1860 in the Philippines, and was presented at the Paris World Exhibition only in 1878. The floral-balsamic aroma with a soft spicy note is actively used in perfume compositions by Carven, Pucci, Erme, Saint Laurent, Cardin...

Ylang-ylang essential oil is often confused with cananga, as it is obtained from the flowers of trees belonging to the same family.(Annonoceal), but to different botanical forms.

Ylang-ylang oil is obtained from the flowers of the tree.CanongaodorataPhil. etThomsonformatgendina (grows in the Philippine, Colorful Islands, Nosy Be, Madagascar), and cananga oil is obtained from the flowers of the tree CanangaodorataFiLetThomsonformatmacrophylla (Java Island).

Kananga essential oil is close in composition to the 3rd grade of ylang-ylang with a reduced content of esters. The healing properties of these oils are similar, although ylang-ylang oil has a more intense effect on the body. Cananga oil also has its advantage; it is five times cheaper than ylang-ylang.
