Naioli

Malaleycaviridiflora(malaleuca)

Naioli, or Malaleuca, like its close relative the tea tree, belongs to the myrtle family. It grows wild in New Caledonia and Austria. The stem of the evergreen tree is covered with a porous, sponge-like bark. In the dense crown you can see clusters of yellowish flowers, but the most valuable thing about this plant is the leaves, which have a strong aroma. The leaves and young shoots contain essential oil. It was first obtained by steam distillation in the Middle Ages on the island of New Caledonia, in the port of Gomen, so the oil was long called “gomenol”. Local residents used the leaves and gomenol in the treatment of many diseases, including infectious ones, purified water with their help, and applied them to open wounds and cuts.

The essential oil is a colorless, sometimes yellowish or greenish liquid with a fragrant, fresh, cool-spicy aroma with a distinct camphor note.

Since the 17th century, it has been known to European doctors as a strong antiseptic.
