External bleeding can occur when a sharp object, such as a knife or broken bone, punctures the skin and damages other organs. Internal bleeding can occur when an organ or part of the body is bruised, such as by kicking a table. Significant internal bleeding usually occurs with injuries caused by a strong blow to a blunt object, such as a car accident in which the driver is thrown against the steering wheel, or a fall from a great height.
