Essence.
This is a kind of light, clay-like substance, reminiscent of lichen. In Raqqa it is called har al-hamam, and in Baghdad it is called qawz kandum.

Choice.
Its best variety is Barbary, and Rakka is weak.

Nature.
Hot, humid in the first degree. It is said to be slightly cooling, but this has not been established.

Properties.
It dries and extinguishes and is said to stop bleeding. One of its properties is that if you take ten rittles of honey, thirty rittles of water and a quarter of a measure of this substance, beat them well and close the neck of the vessel, you will immediately get wine.
