Citrusaurantifolia(dimette)
Tree lime comes from South Asia. Low, just over 4 m, with sharp thorns, smooth ovate leaves and small but very fragrant white flowers. The tree is valued for its tasty fruits. They are similar to lemons, only much smaller in size and pale green in color.
There are two main types of this plant: sour lime(CitrusausantifoliaSwingle) and sweet lime, or European limetta(CitruslimitettaRisso).
The fruits are processed to make delicious fruit juice, Schweppes drinks, ice cream, and candies;
for the production of citric acid and natural food flavoring.
Essential oils are obtained from the peels by cold pressing and distillation, which differ in color, smell, chemical composition and, therefore, in their effect on the human body.
In folk medicine, lime essential oil (limetta) was used as a bactericidal agent, as well as for the treatment of colds, infectious diseases, and fever. The first differs from the second in its pronounced phototoxic effect, delicate fruity aroma, and has a yellow-green color.
