Memory disorder is a kind of dementia, but it is a disorder of the back part of the brain, for it represents a deficiency in one of the abilities of the back part of the brain or a complete loss of all its abilities. Its first reason, according to Galen, is cold. Cold can be either simple, or in combination with dryness, - then the images are not imprinted on the brain, - or in combination with humidity, - then the imprinted images are not stored in it for long. If cold is combined with dryness, this is indicated by insomnia and the fact that such a patient remembers long-past affairs, but cannot remember events related to the present. If the cold is combined with humidity, then this is indicated by hibernation and the fact that the patient does not remember the past at all, but may be able to retain the present in memory longer than the past. And if there is only simple cold, then numbness and dizziness are observed.
Often the disorder arises from dryness and warmth, and then clouding of consciousness occurs. The disorder occurs either in the same part of the brain itself, or in one of its ventricles, or in its vessels. And sometimes a memory disorder occurs due to juices or a disorder of nature in the temples, spreading to the brain. This is mentioned by some of the ancient doctors, and such a phenomenon is confirmed by experience and attested. Memory loss and disorder most often occur from cold and moisture, and sometimes from brain tumors, especially cold ones. Know that if memory loss occurs in the midst of complete health, this portends severe brain diseases such as epilepsy, sactus and lithargus.
Signs of various causes and types of memory disorders. They should be learned from the above general rules, and we will not repeat this for every disease.
Treatment. If the memory disorder is associated with warmth and dryness, then it is easier to treat, and methods of treatment have already been discussed several times. As for the memory disorder from pure dryness, with this disease the patient should be fed moist, balanced food, exercise the head area by rubbing and squeezing with a rough rag, and also move the patient’s arms and legs. In general, exercise should not be strong at all, but only stimulate hunger and the need for more food, rest, sleep and bathing. You also need to warm your head with the well-known warming medicinal bandages, which we will not use.
again to list, as well as blood-sucking cups on the head without an incision, and medications that cause redness. Sometimes it becomes necessary to cauterize the back of the patient’s head in two places and use decoctions of chamomile, sweet clover or goat’s feet, and oils such as iris, narcissus and wallflower.
If a memory disorder arises from cold and damp matter, then remove it by first bringing it to maturity using the means known to you. The patient should be placed in a bright room. You need to start with the lightest evacuations, for example, the usual iyaraja, coloquinta pulp and beaver stream, and then gradually move on to powerful iyarajas. Then, if you are not afraid of a hot disorder of nature, use balazur gruel, for this is a powerful remedy for strengthening the mind and improving memory. Use also other warming substances from among the substances that cause redness, rinses and snuffs that you know.
Do not rush to dry the moisture and do it gradually, being careful that drying does not lead to the complete destruction of the main moisture, which will be followed by a cooling of the nature, increasing the weakening of memory. Such patients should avoid intoxication, places where the wind blows, and an overfilled stomach. They should also completely abstain from washing with water, for hot water relaxes, but cold water causes numbness and harms the sensory pneuma. If such patients happen to have a full stomach, then after that they need to be given a light regimen. Foods that cause sakta, heaviness in the head and numbness and form fumes should be avoided.
As for wine, too much of it is very harmful, but a small amount of it encourages the soul, strengthens and revitalizes the pneuma, and eliminates the need for copious amounts of water; Drinking plenty of water is very harmful for such patients. Long naps during the day and long sleep in general are also harmful to them, especially after significant overcrowding. Excessive insomnia also weakens the pneuma and dissipates it, and at the same time fills the brain with vapors.
They tried giving calamus jam and long pepper jam to similar patients, and it turned out that both of them clearly increased memory. They also tested the following medicine: take equal parts of frankincense, sati tubers, white pepper, saffron and myrrh; All this is mixed with honey and one dirham is consumed every day. They also tested the following composition: calamus - two parts, sati tubers - two parts, black myrobalans - two parts and honey with balazur - one part. The following medicine has also been tested experimentally: take two parts of pepper and cumin and three parts of candy sugar. We tried drinking a mithqal every day on an empty stomach, a medicine made from three quarters of incense and one quarter of pepper. Or they took five parts of cumin, one part of pepper, one part of honey with balazur, and twice as much bee honey as everything else. It is also necessary to refer to simple medicines recorded in Book Two of the Canon, and their place in the headings of diseases of the head. The home of such patients should be a well-lit room.
As for memory disorders due to tumors in the brain, the treatment of this has already been discussed in the paragraphs about faranitus, lithargus and hibernation with insomnia.
