Sweetheart

Origanum valgare L. (original, motherboard)

Dushmyanka, spirit flower, bee lover, forest mint - this is what people call common oregano. The warm, fresh, camphor-tinged aroma of the plant comes from the essential oil it contains in large quantities. To obtain 1 kg of oil, only 50 kg of raw materials are enough. Oregano was also called “motherland” in Russia, since its herb helps well with various female diseases and increases the amount of milk in nursing women.

The homeland of this plant is the countries of the Mediterranean and Southern Europe. Over time, oregano has become one of the most common plants on the European continent and in Asia.

In ancient times, oregano was called “oregan”. Currently, this name has been retained for the spice, traditional for many peoples, which is a powder from oregano inflorescences collected during the budding period. The taste and smell of oregano is reminiscent of marjoram, but much more delicate. Maybe that’s why oregano is sometimes called “wild marjoram.”

Aristotle, Dioscorides, and Aristophanes mentioned the medicinal properties of oregano. Makhzan Ul-Adwiya in his “Treasury of Medicines” wrote: “Drinking a decoction of oregano or an infusion prepared as tea removes thick matter accumulated in the chest and lungs, increases appetite, helps eliminate nausea, as well as a bad, sad mood.”

Odo of Mena wrote in great detail about the effect of oregano on the human body in the poem “On the Properties of Herbs”:

Drinking it treats dropsy and dries out bloating. They say he reconciles black bile with honey water, If the patient takes his Oxybuff for treatment; He also derives the rules when a woman drinks it, applies it grated, or warms herself with boiled grass. When mixed with honey, its powder expels cough; It drives away itching and scab, all kinds of spots on the skin, if you wash them often with the water in which you boiled them; Taken in the bath, the decoction helps those suffering from jaundice; If you take the juice of green oregano, it heals the tongues, drying out swollen ones, and heals the pharynx; If you hold it in your mouth, the wounds in it will heal from the juice... For those whose digestion is slow due to illness, it helps when mixed with white wine; It also relieves stomach pain with heated water. Absorb its juices with vinegar and olive oil. Let freshly removed wool, bruises, and dislocations heal the organs of the body, if it is applied on top. It also drives urine, and if it is taken, it also drives out worms; Grated with teeth for a long time, it drives out pain from there. Drinking its juice helps all internal organs...

Most of the listed properties of oregano have been confirmed by modern clinical studies. In recent years, oregano essential oil has been produced in small quantities, despite the fact that it is one of the most effective aromatherapy preparations. Much more often you can find “Spanish origanum” oil on sale.(Thumuscapitatus), Resembling oregano oil in composition. It has been established that the antiseptic properties of this essential oil are 25 times greater than phenol.
