Adenohypophysis

Adenohypophysis (adenohypophysis, pna, lnh; adeno- + pituitary gland; syn. anterior pituitary gland) - the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, which develops from the ectoderm of the oral region of the embryo and consists mainly of epithelial cells that produce hormones. The adenohypophysis makes up about 75% of the mass of the pituitary gland and includes 3 main types of secretory cells: somatotropocytes, which synthesize growth hormone; corticotropocytes that synthesize adrenocorticotropic hormone; and thyrotropocytes, which synthesize thyroid-stimulating hormone. Hormones of the adenohypophysis regulate the functions of the thyroid gland, adrenal glands, gonads and growth. The adenohypophysis is under the control of the hypothalamus, which regulates the secretion of hormones through the portal vascular system.
