The word afebrile is an excellent example of a Russian borrowing from the Latin “a febre” - “not febrile”, or, as many believe, “cold”. In other words, this is a designation of the opposite of “pyrogenic,” that is, generating heat and irritable states of the cerebral cortex, “hot.” Thus, afebrile refers to all things and events that are opposite in their characteristics to those “with an increased level of active activity of the central nervous system,” which are usually located at the top of the temperature scale.
