Actinomycoma

Actinomycoma is a chronic granulomatous disease caused by actinomycetes (radiant fungi). It is characterized by the formation of granulomas with central necrosis and proliferation of connective tissue. The causative agents are anaerobic actinomycetes, mainly Actinomyces bovis and Actinomyces israelii.

The disease most often affects the face, neck, and chest. Clinically manifests itself in the form of dense painful nodes, ulcerations with the release of pus and “grains of sulfur”. Diagnosis is based on detection of the pathogen in pathological material. Treatment includes long-term antibiotics and may require surgery in severe cases. The prognosis with timely treatment is favorable.

Prevention of actinomyoma consists in observing the rules of personal hygiene, especially the oral cavity, as well as timely treatment of dental diseases.
