The labrum, or Labrum glenoidae, is a thin band of fibrous tissue located inside the rotator cuff. It provides the joint's natural protection and provides stability and functionality to the shoulder joint.
The labrum is located on the back of the scapula and surrounds the neck of the humeroradius. The structure of the labrum consists of a tough fibrous layer covering less dense spongy tissue. This provides the rigidity, strength and flexibility needed to protect the joint from damage.
Functionally, the labrum plays an important role in the stability of the humeral head. As the humeral head articulates with the acetabulum, the lips help align them for smoother, pain-free movement.
