Ataxia Static-Locomotor

Static-locomotor ataxia (a. staticolocomotoria) is a violation of coordination of movements and posture caused by damage to the cerebellum and its pathways.

It is characterized by instability when walking, imbalance at rest and during movement, nystagmus, dysarthria, and intention tremor. Patients cannot stand or walk with their eyes closed. Asynergy and dysmetria of movements are noted.

Causes: tumors, injuries, hemorrhages, inflammatory diseases, degenerative changes in the cerebellum. Treatment depends on the cause and includes drug therapy, physical therapy, and exercise therapy. The prognosis varies from favorable for removable causes to unfavorable for irreversible changes in the cerebellum.
