Auditory fossa
The auditory fossa (lat. fovea otica, lne) is a small depression on the inner surface of the tympanic part of the temporal bone. The auditory fossa is located in the middle part of the inner wall of the tympanic cavity.
The auditory fossa has an oval shape and contains the window of the vestibule (fenestra vestibuli) - an opening connecting the tympanic cavity with the vestibule of the inner ear. The auditory fossa also contains a protrusion - the promontorium, to which the stapes - one of the auditory ossicles - is attached.
Thus, the auditory fossa plays an important role in transmitting sound vibrations from the tympanic cavity to the inner ear. It provides communication between the outer, middle and inner ears during auditory perception.
