Avonex: description, application, side effects and special instructions

Avonex is a drug used to treat relapsing multiple sclerosis (RRMS). It is produced by Biogen Idek France (France), Biogen Idek B.V. (Netherlands) and Biogen B.V. (Netherlands). The active ingredient in Avonex is interferon beta-1a, which is a means of stimulating immune processes.

The drug is available in the form of a lyophilized powder for the preparation of an injection solution of 30 mcg/ml and a lyophilisate for the preparation of a solution for intramuscular administration of 30 mcg/ml. Avonex is injected intramuscularly.

Indications for the use of Avonex are the presence of at least 2 relapses of neurological dysfunction within 3 years and the absence of signs of continuous progression of the disease between relapses.

Like any medicine, Avonex may cause side effects. Some can be serious and require immediate medical attention. These include influenza-like syndrome, headache, myalgia, fever, chills, asthenia, insomnia, dizziness, malaise, fainting (usually once at the beginning of treatment), suicidal tendencies, convulsions, speech impairment, hearing loss, ataxia, anemia, eosinophilia, vasodilation , decrease, arrhythmia, development of upper respiratory tract infections, sinusitis, shortness of breath, otitis media, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia, anorexia, urticaria, hypersensitivity reactions, pain syndrome, incl. arthralgia, abdominal pain, chest pain, development of infections, incl. Herpes zoster, Herpes simplex, muscle spasm, local reactions in the injection area, incl. inflammation, ecchymosis, alopecia, vaginitis, increased levels.

Contraindications to the use of Avonex include hypersensitivity (including to natural or recombinant interferon beta, human serum albumin), severe depression and/or the presence of suicidal thoughts, epilepsy (with insufficient effectiveness of antiepileptic drugs), pregnancy, and breastfeeding.

Avonex should be used with caution in the presence of the following conditions and diseases: severe liver failure, dysfunction of the thyroid gland, cardiovascular diseases, bleeding disorders, pulmonary diseases, diabetes, infections, autoimmune diseases, as well as during the simultaneous use of other medications.

When using Avonex, it is necessary to monitor the patient's condition in order to identify possible side effects and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. During treatment, it is recommended to avoid drinking alcohol and to participate in activities requiring increased concentration and reaction time with caution.
