Beta agents: combination drug for the treatment of skin diseases

Betagents is a combination medicine manufactured by Dr. Robert Winser Pharma GmbH in Germany. It contains two active ingredients: gentamicin and betamethasone.

Gentamicin is an antibiotic that is used to fight bacterial infections. Betamethasone is a glucocorticosteroid that helps reduce inflammation and itching.

Betagents is used to treat infected skin lesions, such as dermatoses, allergic and eczematous skin diseases, acute non-allergic dermatitis, skin infections in psoriasis, exfoliative dermatitis, lichen planus.

The drug is available in the form of 5 gram eye ointment and eye drops.

When using the ointment, side effects may occur, such as burning, itching, irritation, dry skin, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acne, hypopigmentation. When using ointment under occlusive dressings, maceration, skin atrophy, stretch marks, and prickly heat may occur. With prolonged treatment and/or application to large surfaces, systemic side effects may occur.

Beta agents are contraindicated for hypersensitivity, chickenpox, skin tuberculosis, vaccination, and breastfeeding. During pregnancy it is prescribed in exceptional cases.

The medicine is used with caution in children. If signs of sensitization or irritation appear, treatment should be discontinued. If superinfection develops, the drug is discontinued and adequate antibacterial therapy is prescribed.

Interactions with other drugs have not been described, and there is no information about overdose.
