Bicillin-1: penicillin group antibiotic
Bicillin-1 is an antibiotic of the penicillin group, which is produced in Russia by the companies Sintez AKO and Kurgan. Its international name is benzathine benzylpenicillin, and it is also known under the synonyms Benzicillin-1, Retarpen and Extensillin.
Bicillin-1 is available in several dosage forms, including powder for the preparation of injection solutions of various dosages: 600,000 units, 300,000 units, 600,000 units and 1,200,000 units. The active substance is benzathine benzylpenicillin.
Bicillin-1 is used to treat diseases caused by treponemes such as syphilis, yaws and pinta. It is also used to prevent exacerbations of rheumatism, erysipelas and scarlet fever, as well as in combination with short-acting penicillins for the treatment of acute tonsillitis, scarlet fever, wound infections and the prevention of postoperative complications.
Despite its effectiveness, Bicillin-1 has a number of contraindications and side effects. It should not be prescribed to patients with hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems and other antibiotics. It is also not recommended for use for bronchial asthma, hay fever and a tendency to allergic manifestations.
Side effects of Bicillin-1 may include headache, anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, coagulation disorders, allergic reactions (rash on the skin and mucous membranes, urticaria, fever, eosinophilia, joint pain, Quincke's edema, anaphylactic shock) and local phenomena, such as pain at the injection site, infiltrates, abscesses, fistulas and peripheral neuritis.
Bicillin-1 may interact with other drugs, for example, aminoglycosides and cephalosporins may enhance its effect, and NSAIDs and glucocorticoids may alter its elimination.
When prescribing Bicillin-1, you must be careful and follow special instructions. It must be administered strictly intramuscularly to a considerable depth; an aspiration test is performed before injection. It is not recommended to use Bicillin-1 for the prevention of congenital syphilis in children and for the treatment of syphilis in the presence of neurosyphilis, since it does not have sufficient activity against these forms of the disease.
The total dose of Bicillin-1 depends on the type and severity of the disease, as well as the age and weight of the patient. It is usually prescribed in a dose of 600,000 units to 2,400,000 units once or over several days.
Before starting treatment with Bicillin-1, it is necessary to conduct allergy tests for sensitivity to penicillins. If allergic reactions develop, you must immediately stop using the drug and carry out appropriate therapy.
In general, Bicillin-1 is an effective and relatively safe antibiotic for the treatment of certain infectious diseases. However, its use should only be carried out under the supervision of a physician and taking into account the individual characteristics of the patient.
