Bivacin: use, indications, contraindications and side effects

Bivacin (international name - Bacitracin + Neomycin) is a combination antibiotic produced by the Slovenian pharmaceutical company Lek DD. This drug is available in several dosage forms, including powder, ophthalmic ointment, and powder solution.

The main components of the drug are Bacitracin and Neomycin. Bacitracin is a cyclic polypeptide that has a bactericidal effect on gram-positive microorganisms. Neomycin, in turn, is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that has a bactericidal effect on gram-negative microorganisms.

Bivacin is used to treat infections of the skin, soft tissues and mucous membranes, such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, otitis media, rhinitis, laryngitis, infected wounds, boils, burns and other infections. However, before using Bivacin, it is necessary to take into account contraindications and possible side effects.

Contraindications to the use of Bivacin include hypersensitivity to the drug, severe cardiac or renal dysfunction, damage to the auditory nerve, pregnancy and lactation.

Side effects that may occur when using Bivacin include allergic reactions, impaired vestibular function, damage to the auditory nerve and kidneys, albuminuria, and neuromuscular blockade.

The interaction of Bivacin with other drugs should also be taken into account. It is not recommended to combine Bivacin with cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, some diuretics, narcotics, anesthetics and muscle relaxants.

According to the 1996 edition of the Register of Medicines of Russia and the reference book “Medicines” by M.A. Klyuev’s 2001 edition, there is no data on an overdose of Bivacin and no special instructions for its use.
