Blastolem: an alkylating agent for the treatment of cancer
Blastolem, also known internationally as Cisplatin, is one of the most effective alkylating agents for the treatment of various types of cancer. This drug is manufactured by Lemery in Mexico and belongs to the group of platinum derivatives.
The dosage form of Blastolem is presented as a lyophilized powder for the preparation of an injection solution. The active ingredient is cisplatin, which is a platinum compound and exerts its effect through DNA alkylation.
Blastolem is used to treat metastatic ovarian and testicular cancer, bladder cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer, head and neck cancer. However, this drug has a number of contraindications, such as hypersensitivity to its components, insufficiency of kidney and bone marrow function, hearing impairment, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
When using Blastolem, side effects are possible, such as renal dysfunction with increased levels of creatinine and uric acid in the blood serum, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, hearing loss, taste disturbance, peripheral neuropathy, convulsive syndrome, myelosuppression, changes in electrolyte balance, increased transaminase levels and allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock.
The interaction of Blastolem with other drugs should also be taken into account. It is incompatible with nephrotoxic drugs such as aminoglycosides. Mannitol may reduce urinary excretion of the drug.
To reduce nephrotoxicity, before starting treatment, it is recommended to carry out an infusion (over 8-12 hours) of 1-2 liters of 5% dextrose or saline. During therapy, it is necessary to monitor the function of the kidneys, hearing organs and central nervous system.
Although there is no information about an overdose of Blastolem, if it occurs, appropriate measures must be taken immediately.
In conclusion, it can be noted that Blastolem is an effective drug for the treatment of various types of cancer, however, its use should only be carried out under the supervision of qualified medical personnel and with all necessary precautions.
