BOTKINA POINT is an architectural landmark of Sergiev Posad. This is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. Built in the spirit of eclecticism, it has characteristic features of the English neo-Gothic style. The architecture of the building displays many style motifs: arched windows and balcony doors, crenellated stained glass windows, carved cornices and pilasters. The house is decorated with a turret with a spire, on top of which there is a weather vane in the shape of a stylized bird.
Botkin's house is a typical estate complex of the late 19th century. It was erected in 1886 for a wealthy merchant named Botkin, who ran a wine shop and owned a lot of real estate. Architectural work was carried out by the best architects not only of Sergiev, but also of Moscow. The houses, including the luxurious Botkin estate, are entirely made in brick style. The classic material was valued for its durability; in addition, brick was excellent insulation, which was essential for the Russian winter. And the extraordinary charm of the building was added by beautiful decorative elements in the form of ornate curls decorating the pediments and facades.
A special flavor was also introduced into the interior, which became a kind of reflection of the spirit of the times. Carved wooden panels, unique mosaic decor, and plaster relief decorations create an image of the high status of its owner. It can be seen in the graceful curve of the staircase and in the grandiose area of the formal dining room, which demonstrates not only the sophistication of the hostess, but also the level of her culture. Guests from different parts of Russia came here for feasts, receptions, and balls; in total, up to a hundred people could be accommodated here.
Today, Botkin’s house is a monument of cultural heritage, regularly restored and serving tourists as an accessible way to feel the charm of antiquity, which has preserved a piece of a bygone era to this day.
