Breslau stick

The murine typhus bacillus (Rickettsia prowazekii) is the causative agent of epidemic typhus. Belongs to the genus Rickettsia, whose representatives are obligate intracellular parasites. The Breslau rod has a coccoid or rod-shaped shape with dimensions of 0.3-0.5 x 0.8-2.0 microns. It reproduces only in the cells of warm-blooded animals and humans. The carrier is lice. The disease is characterized by fever, intoxication, and rash. Treatment is carried out with tetracycline antibiotics. Prevention includes the fight against lice and quarantine measures.
