Cabikinase

Cabikinase: fibrinolytic drug from Sweden

Cabikinase, also known as streptokinase, is a fibrinolytic drug used to treat various vascular and cardiac diseases. The drug was developed in Sweden and is produced by pharmaceutical companies Pharmacia and Upjohn AB.

Cabikinase is an enzyme protein produced from the culture of various strains of the bacterium Streptococcus haemolyticus. It has a molecular weight of about 5000 daltons and is a powder for preparing an infusion solution.

The use of cabikinase is recommended for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction within the first 12 hours after the onset of symptoms, thromboembolism of the pulmonary artery and its branches, arterial thrombosis (acute, subacute and chronic), thrombosis of peripheral arteries, thrombosis due to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in children, including during catheterization of newborns, thrombosis of a hemodialysis shunt, thrombosis during prosthetic heart valves, chronic obliterating endarteritis, chronic occlusive arterial diseases, rethmbosis after vascular surgery, obliteration of an arteriovenous shunt, occlusion of the central vessels of the retina, venous thrombosis (acute deep vein thrombosis of the extremities and pelvis, thrombosis subclavian veins or veins of internal organs, rethrombosis after vascular operations), washing intravenous catheters, including for hemodialysis, as well as for mono- or combination therapy of rest angina in acute myocardial infarction.

However, cabinase has a number of contraindications, including hypersensitivity to the drug, bleeding (acute, recent, internal), hemorrhages and a high risk of their occurrence, tumors with a tendency to bleeding, brain tumors or metastases in the central nervous system, erosive and ulcerative lesions of the gastrointestinal tract with bleeding in over the past 6 months and chronic inflammatory diseases of the colon, including ulcerative colitis, acute pancreatitis, severe uncontrolled arterial hypertension, aneurysm, mitral heart disease with atrial fibrillation, pregnancy and lactation.

Cabikinase should only be used under medical supervision and only in cases where the potential benefit to the patient outweighs the risk of possible side effects. When using cabikinase, side effects such as bleeding, allergic reactions, headaches, nausea, vomiting, fever and others are possible.

Cabikinase is available only with a doctor's prescription and should only be used under the doctor's supervision. It is necessary to carefully study the instructions for use of the drug and follow all the doctor’s recommendations.
