Cheilitis

Inflammation of the red border, mucous membrane and tip of the lips. Cheilitis can develop from injury and cracked lips, from burns, including burns from acid or alkali, from prolonged exposure to the sun, from frost, especially in windy weather. Inflammation of the lips can be caused by parasitic fungi (candidiasis) or viruses (herpes). More often it occurs against the background of disruption of the gastrointestinal tract, with severe heart disease, with a deficiency of vitamins in the body, especially group B. Cheilitis can often be a manifestation of an allergic reaction to the paint used in lipsticks, etc. It can be acute, but more often the disease is chronic.

Acute inflammation is manifested by redness and swelling of the lip, pain, which intensifies when eating or talking. The inflammation can become purulent, forming an abscess (abscess); this is accompanied by increased body temperature, headache, etc.

The chronic form of cheilitis is characterized by peeling, sometimes superficial ulceration, long-term non-healing cracks of the lips (especially in the corners of the mouth) are observed - angular cheilitis, or jamming. May manifest as gradually increasing swelling and lip enlargement.

Treatment for cheilitis depends on its cause, so you should consult a doctor for diagnosis and treatment. To prevent cheilitis in the event of a lip injury, the damaged area is treated with a gauze or cotton swab moistened with a solution of rivanol, potassium permanganate or furatsilin.

To prevent cheilitis in case of sunburn or severe chapped lips in the cold, it is recommended to lubricate them with an ointment containing vitamin A and protect the face from direct sunlight. If your lips are burned by strong acid, alkali or other toxic substances, the affected area should be immediately washed with plenty of water.

It should be remembered that untimely or incorrect treatment can aggravate the inflammatory process and delay recovery.
