The cranial index, also known as the cranial index, is a cranial parameter used in anthropological studies to assess the physical development of individuals. It is a measure of the ratio of the width of the skull to its height, and is calculated by dividing the width of the skull (measured at its widest point) by the height of the skull (from the top of the forehead to the most prominent point of the back of the head). The cranial index can be used to identify certain types of skulls, such as brachycephalic (wide and low skull), dolichocephalic (long and narrow skull), or mesocephalic type (medium in size and shape).
