Cymbopogon winterianusJowitt
The tall, aromatic herb citronella of the cereal family grows wild on the island of Ceylon. This plant serves as one of the most important sources of valuable chemical ingredients needed in perfumery, food and chemical industries.
To increase the production of citronella essential oil, the main components of which are geraniol (up to 25%) and citronellal (up to 40%), the plant began to be cultivated in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Guatemala, and Taiwan. At the same time, work was carried out to create new, more productive varieties. As a result, a variety of citronella, or “shuttlebird”, was obtained.CymbopogonwinterianusJowitt. The essential oil from this plant is called java.
From Ceylon Citronella Herb OilCymbopogonnardusRendle Java oil has a higher citronellal content. Thanks to this substance, java essential oil has a fresh lemon scent with a slight woody undertone. In aromatherapy, both oils are used in the same way, although it is possible that a more detailed study of their actions over time will reveal some differences.
