Traumatic coma is a type of coma associated with severe mechanical damage to the brain and internal organs. The condition usually develops acutely after traumatic brain injury, concussion, resulting in a syndrome characterized by loss of consciousness, complete loss of orientation in time and space, lack of pupillary response to light and corneal reflexes, decreased blood pressure, and shallow rapid breathing. Traumatic comas are the result of severe brain damage from a severe mechanical agent affecting various brain structures. Etiology: skull fracture; TBI; compression of the brain as a result of impaired functioning of brain structures (tumor); acute cerebral ischemia; aneurysm.
