Cricoid Cartilage

Cricoid Cartilage is a hyaline cartilage that resembles a ring in appearance. It forms part of the anterior and lateral walls, as well as most of the posterior wall of the larynx.

The cricoid cartilage has the shape of a signet or ring. It is located at the level of the sixth and seventh cervical vertebrae. The thyroid and arytenoid cartilages are attached to it above, and the cricoid membrane and trachea below.

Functions of the cricoid cartilage:

  1. Supports and stabilizes the larynx.
  2. Serves as a support for the attachment of the vocal cords.
  3. Participates in the formation of the glottis during phonation.
  4. Protects the entrance to the trachea during swallowing.

Thus, the cricoid cartilage plays an important role in the functioning of the larynx, ensuring its mobility and participating in the processes of breathing and voice formation. Its unique signet ring shape allows it to perform these functions.

Cricoid cartilage is a hyaline cartilage in the larynx that resembles a ring in appearance. It forms part of the anterior, lateral and posterior walls of the larynx and is one of the most important cartilages in this area.

The cricoid cartilage is located at the front of the larynx and is shaped like a ring that encircles the vocal cords. It consists of two halves, which are connected to each other by a thin bridge. Each half of the cartilage is crescent-shaped, and both are connected by cartilaginous ligaments.

The cricoid cartilage is part of the laryngeal complex, which consists of several cartilages and muscles responsible for the production of speech and voice. This cartilage plays an important role in the formation of the voice, as it creates the conditions for the resonance of sounds that are formed during voice formation.

If the cricoid cartilage is damaged, laryngeal dysfunction may occur, which can lead to voice and breathing problems. Therefore, it is very important to monitor the health of the larynx and promptly consult a doctor if symptoms of cricoid cartilage damage occur.

In anatomy, the cricoid cartilage has one of the most important functions - it protects the ligament from all kinds of damage. In humans, it is located in the very center of the larynx, where the cartilage is located. However, the human body is not the only place where this cartilaginous organ exists. For example, in addition to humans, it is found in crocodiles, parrots and whales.

Many people don’t even know what cartilage looks like or what the larynx is. But it is an important elastic cartilage of a round shape, which is capable of reaching about 4 cm. It is located between the two thyroid cartilages under the vocal cord, which connects both halves of the laryngeal folds, which are three paired folds in the form of triangles. Each such fold has the same width, the angle between them is small, almost straight. The side folds extend to the midline of the neck, while the middle folds are short and do not touch the midline. From all three halves extend behind the vowel process of cartilage - the ring - cartilaginous plates,
