Dartelin: use, side effects and prescription features

Dartelin is a medication belonging to the group of antispasmodic drugs, purine derivatives. Its international name is pentoxifylline, and it is also known by a number of synonyms, including Agapurin, Arbiflex and Pentilline. The drug is produced in Slovenia by the Lek DD company and is presented in the form of tablets containing 400 mg of the active substance.

The use of Dartelin is recommended for obliterating atherosclerosis of the vessels of the extremities, cerebrovascular insufficiency, ischemic stroke, viral neuroinfection, dementia, diabetic neuro- and angiopathy, Raynaud's syndrome, obstructive bronchitis, bronchial asthma, pulmonary emphysema, thrombosis of arteriovenous shunts and vascular impotence. However, the drug has a number of contraindications, which include hypersensitivity to other methylxanthine derivatives, hemorrhagic stroke, retinal hemorrhage, acute myocardial infarction, severe atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries, recent bleeding, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

When using Dartelin, side effects may occur, such as anxiety, impaired consciousness, convulsions, visual disturbances, scotoma, tachycardia, angina attacks, arrhythmia, hypotension, sore throat, laryngitis, flu-like syndrome, nasal congestion, xerostomia, anorexia, intestinal atony, exacerbation of cholecystitis, cholestatic hepatitis, increased concentrations of liver enzymes (AST, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, LDH), leukopenia, pancytopenia, thrombocytopenia, hypofibrinogenemia and allergic reactions.

Dartelin's interaction with many other drugs may enhance its effect and affect the blood coagulation system, antihypertensive drugs and antidiabetic drugs. Concomitant administration with other drugs in this group may increase stimulation of the central nervous system. In case of an overdose of Dartelin, symptoms such as hypotension, hot flashes, drowsiness, agitation, impaired consciousness and convulsions may occur, requiring immediate treatment.

When prescribing Dartelin, it is necessary to carefully evaluate the benefits of its use in relation to the risks of possible side effects and contraindications, especially in patients with severely impaired liver and kidney function. The dosage of the drug should be individual and determined depending on the severity of the disease, age and characteristics of the patient.
